Maidstone's Best Kept Secret
Saturday 12th October
Last Saturday evening was the first concert of the season for Maidstone Symphony Orchestra. MSO are always excellent, and this concert was truly memorable.
The opening piece, Four Sea Pieces by Benjamin Britten was beautifully performed and most enjoyable.
The highlight of the evening for this reviewer was the second piece of the evening. Elgar's wonderful cello concerto was played faultlessly by 16 year old Laura van der Heijden, last year's winner of the BBC's Young Musician of the Year.
Her performance was superb, and enthusiastically applauded by the captivated audience.
The final piece was Rachmaninov's 3rd Symphony, perhaps the least well known of the three pieces, and played with great gusto and skill.
Conductor and Music Director Brian Wright is to be congratulated on yet another outstanding evening of music from this largely amateur orchestra that consistently maintains professional standards.
